The Need for a Checklist to Improve Your Intranet

The development of an intranet involves a number of factors, including the objectives within your company. However, when you already have your intranet in place, you have to perform regular maintenance on it. By performing certain maintenance, you can greatly improve ownership of your intranet content as well as the quality of it and its usability. One of the ways in which you can get started with improving your intranet is to develop a checklist of your intranet objectives.

The Objectives of Developing an Intranet

Whenever a company develops an intranet, it will most likely be used for one or a combination of the following four elements:

  • Collaborating and communicating
  • Company management and operations
  • Managing your intranet portal
  • Publishing webpage content

Additionally, and just like the internet and World Wide Web, your intranet will employ similar concepts and technologies such as servers and web browsers.

What Intranet Objectives should be Included on Your Checklist

In order to update your intranet objectives, there are certain tasks that should be included and that focus on the purpose of or the re-purposing of it. Of all your intranet objectives, the primary one should be ease of use so that your employees have a shorter learning curve. Be sure that you shorten the different communication venues that you use so that videos and web content does not get stale. Navigating through your intranet should be simplified wherever possible. Another critical aspect is that you do not want your intranet’s main pages to be “news-heavy.”

The Benefits of Re-purposing Your Intranet Objectives

The key benefits of examining and re-purposing intranet objectives are to overcome the fear of allowing negative employee feedback and to broaden your company’s horizons without having to re-write the entire guidelines of the company. In so doing, you will be able to improve and maximize the ownership, quality, and usability of your intranet’s content. User adoption of the intranet and the support of it will increase which will reduce your overall support costs.
