If you haven’t already heard, yesterday was Foursquare’s biggest day ever for new user signups. Since the news broke, we have received a ton of requests from clients who want to know:

  1. What is Foursquare
  2. How Foursquare works
  3. If Foursquare can be used to market their products/services

We spent some time looking at the app this morning and here is the breakdown:

What is Foursquare?

According to their website, Foursquare provides a way to check-in, find your friends and unlock your city. Adding Foursquare to your phone gives you & your friends a new way to explore your city. You can earn points and unlock badges for discovering new things. It can be used on any US based cell phone that can send text messages, but we recommend using a Smartphone (iPhone, Blackberry, Android, etc.) so that you can take advantage of the apps.

How Foursquare Works

Using Foursquare is simple. You can find the entire 5 step process by clicking the link below:

How to Unlock Your World With Foursquare

To sum it up, Foursquare provides a platform where users can share recommendations based on their geographic location using their mobile phones.

Can Foursquare be used to market my products/services?

Foursquare can be used to engage mobile customers with "Specials," which are discounts and prizes you can offer your loyal customers when they “check in” on foursquare at your venue. Although this won’t work for every business, there could be a great opportunity to use Foursquare if you are in the food service industry. By providing “Foursquare Specials” to your customers, you will be able to track how your venue is performing over time using their robust set of venue analytics.

Although Foursquare’s CEO Dennis Crowley believes Facebook and Foursquare serve two different purposes, many people are wondering if Foursquare can survive in the face of competition from Facebook. Let us know your thoughts!
